About the Item

This is a large chromolithograph botanical print depicting the orchid species Dendrobium secundum Lindl. It is from the 19th-century publication "Illustrations d'orchidees des Indes Orientales Neerlandaises" by W.H. de Vriese. The illustration shows the orchid's distinctive growth habit, with a prominent, elongated leaf and multiple flowering stems. The stems bear densely packed flowers, colored in shades of red and pink, with each individual bloom oriented in one direction, which is a characteristic feature of Dendrobium secundum. The artist's name "Van Aaken. ad viv del." indicates that the artist drew this image from life, capturing the orchid in its natural form. "Lith royale de C.W. Mieling" suggests that this lithograph was produced by the royal lithographer C.W. Mieling, known for high-quality work.
