About the Item

Title: Ottoman Military Encampment – The Grand Vizier’s Tent, 1734 Engraving Description: This rare 1734 copperplate engraving presents a detailed architectural depiction of *La Tente du Grand Vizir*—the ceremonial tent of the Ottoman Empire’s Grand Vizier. Published in *Les Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde*, this print was created to illustrate the grandeur and order of the Ottoman court, especially in a military context. It offers a fascinating glimpse into both the design of nomadic imperial structures and how these spaces conveyed authority and ritual. The upper portion of the engraving shows a top-down plan of a walled compound or palisade enclosing several tents. At the center stands the richly appointed main tent of the Grand Vizier (labeled “1”), flanked by smaller auxiliary tents including one for private retreat (“3”) and one for divan audiences (“2”). The perimeter is surrounded by a curved palisade and gate-like entries, marked by flags and tall standards. To the right of the encampment is a section marked “4,” described in the caption as an area reserved for “certain needs,” possibly a latrine or service zone—suggesting the logistical thoroughness of the Ottoman field organization. The lower half of the plate presents a frontal elevation of the Grand Vizier’s tent, with its richly embroidered fabric and symmetrical layout. The canopy is topped with a pointed conical roof, and the tent’s surface is covered with stylized motifs, including floral and medallion designs indicative of Ottoman textile traditions. The legend beneath the engraving decodes the numbered sections, adding another layer of informative annotation for the viewer. This image is not merely architectural—it is ceremonial, emblematic of power, discipline, and ritual space in the mobile empire. The Grand Vizier’s tent, as shown here, would have served both as a command center and a diplomatic venue on campaign, symbolizing imperial prestige and centralized control. Condition is very good. The print has wide margins, deep impressions, and only minor age toning. There is a small stain at lower right and a few marginal creases but nothing affecting the image area. The plate mark is crisp, and the paper remains strong and stable. Ideal for display in a neoclassical or historical interior, this print benefits from a large mat opening to emphasize the vertical composition. A warm neutral mat and a dark walnut or gilded frame would harmonize with the engraving’s refined lines. Archival backing and UV-protective glass are recommended for preservation.
