About the Item

This vintage pair of beautiful birds art were done by a famous pair of British Artists that worked together and illustrated many books. The prints of the lithographs were purchased from the estate of a lovely British woman that owned them since the 1950s. Obtain their original black wood frames and double gold trimmed matts. Charming for a man's den or library. We do not know much about this type of art but appreciate them so much and priced them to sell for someone that will appreciate and enjoy them! BIO: J. Wolf (Joseph Wolf) and H.C. Richter (Henry Constantine Richter) were 19th-century artists who collaborated with John Gould on ornithological publications, creating detailed, hand-colored lithographs of birds for his works, such as The Birds of Great Britain. While Wolf was a talented painter and illustrator, Richter also served as a lithographic engraver for many of the plates, rendering Wolf's drawings and creating his own works for Gould's influential books.   Who They Were Joseph Wolf (1820-1899): A German painter, illustrator, and lithographer known for his naturalistic animal and bird drawings.  Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902): An English artist who became a significant illustrator for John Gould, responsible for a vast number of the lithographic plates and watercolors for his publications.  Their Collaboration with John Gould Wolf and Richter were both employed by the famous ornithologist John Gould to illustrate his ambitious, multi-volume books on birds.  They worked on major publications including The Birds of Asia and The Birds of Great Britain.  Their contributions included detailed drawings of various bird species, which were then translated into lithographic plates for the books.  The Artistic Process In many cases, Joseph Wolf provided the original drawings.  Henry Constantine Richter would then create the lithographic stones from these drawings, or sometimes make his own drawings and engrave them.  The final prints were then hand-colored, resulting in the beautiful and accurate ornithological illustrations that are still valued today.
