About the Item

A very pretty pair of 18th-century engravings depicting two elegant women with hairstyles in the fashion of the time. These engravings come from the magazine "Le Cabinet des Modes ou les Modes Nouvelles" (The Cabinet of Modes or New Fashions), which featured clothing, jewelry, and goldwork. All the plates in these magazines were engraved by Duhamel, based on drawings by Leclerc, Desrais, Pugin, Duhamel, and two artists identified by their initials: B. and L. Le Cabinet des Modes was the first regularly published French fashion magazine. This pair of engravings depicts two ladies' hairstyles: The first features a hairstyle known as the Ingénue with a straw hat and a large feather. A blue shawl, held in place by a jewel in front, is placed around the hat. The woman wears hoop earrings. The second engraving features a hairstyle known as the Hedgehog with hooks and flowers at the top. These two engravings depict women with their hair and clothing styled in the style of Rose Bertin. Marie-Jeanne Bertin, known as Rose Bertin, was a dress merchant. Marie-Antoinette, the young Queen of France, made her her "Minister of Fashion." Pair of engravings - France - 18th century
