About the Item

An elegant and most decorative pair of French mid 19th century Neo-Classical st. Prints of Bacchus and Mercury. Each wonderfully detailed print is by Jean-Baptiste-Raphael-Urbain Massard, while being published and printed by F. Chardon. Bacchus is standing naked on a rectangular platform while leaning on a grape vine wrapped tree trunk. He is holding a grape cluster in one hand and a scroll in the other, while wearing a grape vine wreath and gazing to the side. Mercury is also standing naked on a rectangular platform leaning a tree stump while having a draped cloth over his shoulder and wrapped around his arm. Both wonderful prints are matted and set within a mottled Giltwood frame. Jean-Baptiste-Raphaël-Urbain Massard (1775–1843) was a French engraver from the noted Massard family, admired for his precise reproductive engravings of classical sculptures and paintings. He contributed expertly executed plates to major 19th-century art and antiquities publications, helping document important collections before the advent of photography. Imprimerie F. Chardon (1820–1860) was a Parisian printing house known for producing high-quality art books and engraved plates during the early to mid-19th century. Under François Chardon, the press collaborated with leading artists and institutions, becoming recognized for its crisp impressions and fine craftsmanship.
