About the Item
Pair of Worcester Porcelain Vase Designs by Donaldson, Gilt Blue Grounds, 1910
This decorative pair of chromolithographs illustrates two Worcester porcelain vase designs after Donaldson, published in 1910 in R. L. Hobson’s authoritative study of Worcester porcelain. Shown together, the plates present a coherent and visually strong pairing, unified by deep blue grounds, rich gilding, and finely detailed figurative panels.
NOTE: The prints are offered unframed, giving flexibility to select a frame that best suits the intended interior. The attached image of the prints in a frame is an impression only.
The first print depicts a lidded vase with two painted panels, each framed by elaborate gilt scrollwork and floral ornament. One panel shows a domestic figural scene, while the surrounding reserves are filled with flowers and birds, creating a lively contrast against the dark blue ground. The faceted form of the vase is clearly articulated through gold borders and carefully balanced decoration, emphasizing the craftsmanship associated with high-quality Worcester wares.
The second print shows a taller vase with a single large figurative panel, also set against a deep blue ground with extensive gilded ornament. The scene, rendered in a classical idiom, occupies most of the body and is framed by delicate gold detailing that draws the eye inward. Compared to the first vase, this design is more monumental and vertical, providing a pleasing counterpoint when the two prints are displayed together.
Gold highlighting is a defining feature of both designs. The chromolithographic process captures the warmth and subtle sheen of the gilding, especially along rims, footrings, and ornamental borders, conveying the luxurious appearance of the original porcelain. The consistent colour palette and shared decorative language make these two prints an intentional and harmonious pair rather than a coincidental grouping.
Both plates originate from Worcester Porcelain: A Description of the Ware from the Wall Period to the Present Day by R. L. Hobson, published in London by Bernard Quaritch in 1910. They were drawn by J. H. Thorpe and printed by W. Griggs
Sons, renowned for their high-quality colour printing for scholarly publications.
This pair works particularly well for display in a dining room, library, or refined interior, where the combination of narrative figural scenes and rich blue-and-gold ornament provides both decorative impact and historical interest.
Condition:
Very good condition. Light, even age toning consistent with early 20th-century chromolithographs. Colours remain strong and well preserved. Minor handling marks at the margins. Visible plate marks.
Framing tips:
Frame as a matched pair in dark walnut or ebonised frames with generous ivory mats. Slightly wider lower margins will emphasize the height of the vases and create a balanced presentation on the wall.
