About the Item
Panoramic View of Vienna – Imperial Capital, Salmon / Tirion, Amsterdam c.1740
Description:
This finely engraved panoramic view depicts Vienna as the imperial capital of the Habsburg Empire in the early eighteenth century, shown from an elevated viewpoint along the Danube. The fortified city is rendered with clarity and balance, its walls, bastions, church towers, monasteries and civic buildings rising above the riverbanks and surrounding countryside. Boats animate the Danube in the foreground, underscoring Vienna’s strategic and commercial importance within Central Europe.
The print is derived from the geographical and historical works of the English author Thomas Salmon and was issued for the Dutch market as part of the influential publication “Hedendaagsche Historie, of Tegenwoordige Staat van alle Volkeren”. It was published in Amsterdam by Isaak Tirion, one of the leading Enlightenment-era publishers of the Netherlands. The small inscription in the upper margin, “Tom. 9. pag. 247”, confirms its original placement within volume 9 of the work, a typical feature of plates intended for bound inclusion.
Although the title is in Italian, reflecting the international circulation of city views in the eighteenth century, the engraving was produced within a Dutch publishing context and combines documentary precision with a refined, decorative sensibility. Views of Vienna from this period are particularly desirable, as they show the city before the major urban changes of the later eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, preserving its Baroque scale and fortified character.
This print is equally suited to a scholarly collection or to use as a statement piece in a classical or contemporary interior, where its panoramic format and architectural detail add historical depth and visual elegance.
Condition report:
Original copper engraving on laid paper, light even age toning consistent with mid-18th-century paper, strong and clear impression, visible plate mark, mild age darkening in the margins, overall very good condition. Flattened fold lines as issued. Protected by matting board.
Framing tips:
A dark walnut or ebonized frame with a wide off-white or soft grey mat enhances the panoramic format; consider museum glass to preserve detail and reduce reflections.
