About the Item
Papal Swiss Guard
Pioneer, Vatican Military Costumes – Polidori c.1820
This matched pair of hand-colored costume prints depicts members of the Papal military establishment in Rome: a Swiss Guard in full ceremonial dress and a Pioneer of the Pope’s Guard shown in working attire. Together they present a rare and engaging contrast between ceremonial display and practical service within the Vatican’s armed corps during the early 19th century.
The Swiss Guard figure is shown wearing the instantly recognizable striped uniform long associated with papal service, rendered here with careful attention to color, cut, and posture. Set against a Roman architectural backdrop, the figure emphasizes tradition, ceremony, and the historical continuity of the Guard as protectors of the Pope. The vivid palette and balanced composition make this plate especially attractive for display.
The companion print shows a Pioneer of the Pope’s Guard, a less frequently depicted role. Equipped with an axe and apron and accompanied by background activity suggesting construction or maintenance, this image adds social and functional context to the papal forces. It reflects the everyday labor that supported ceremonial power and military presence within the Vatican.
Both prints were published in London around 1820 and come from “Sketches Illustrative of the Manners and Costumes of France, Switzerland and Italy” by John William Polidori. The book belongs to the Grand Tour tradition of costume illustration, aimed at documenting regional, national, and institutional dress for an educated European audience. Polidori’s work is valued for its clarity of observation, strong draftsmanship, and refined hand coloring.
These prints appeal to collectors of Swiss Guard and Vatican imagery, military costume history, and early 19th-century European costume books. They also function extremely well as decorative works, whether framed as a pair or displayed individually in an interior with a classical or historical sensibility.

Napoleonic Imperial Guard Grenadiers, Officer and Soldier – French Prints
Description:
This fine pair of hand-colored 19th-century prints depicts members of Napoleon Bonaparte’s elite Imperial Guard Grenadiers, one of the most prestigious and recognizable units of the Napoleonic army. On the left, an officer and a soldier of the Guard are shown standing and conversing, their uniforms rendered with careful attention to rank, posture, and insignia. On the right, a fusilier grenadier of the Imperial Guard is depicted in full dress (grande tenue), standing alone in a composed, almost ceremonial stance.
The Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard were the embodiment of Napoleonic military prestige. Selected for their experience, discipline, and physical stature, they served both as an elite fighting force and as a visual symbol of imperial authority. These prints emphasize uniform details such as the bearskin-style headgear with plumes, cross-belts, muskets, gaiters, and the distinctive color palette of the Guard, making them valuable visual documents for historians, collectors, and military uniform specialists.
The prints originate from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843, with illustrations after designs by Horace Vernet. Vernet was the foremost visual chronicler of Napoleonic France, and his imagery played a key role in shaping the 19th-century perception of Napoleon’s army, balancing historical accuracy with heroic idealization. These works were intended not only as book illustrations but also as standalone images suitable for framing, which explains their refined execution and enduring decorative appeal.
Offered together, this pair forms a coherent and highly attractive set, ideal for collectors of Napoleonic history, French military art...
