About the Item
1855 Parade of Honor – Freiburg Crossbowmen and Strasbourg Riflemen in Formation
Description: This striking hand-colored lithograph, created by H. Jenny and lithographed by Kümmerly and Wittmer, is part of the *Fest Album* commemorating Bern’s entry into the Swiss Confederation on March 6, 1353. Published in Bern and Zurich in 1855, this large oblong folio captures the historical pageantry of the 1853 festival, showcasing reenactments of Swiss and allied military units in full regalia.
The composition presents a dramatic juxtaposition of two military contingents: the *Freiburger Armbrustschützen* (Freiburg Crossbowmen) on the left and the *Strassburger Büchsenmeister* (Strasbourg Riflemen) on the right. These two groups symbolize the evolution of medieval Swiss warfare, from traditional crossbow units to the more modern gunpowder-based musketeers.
The Freiburg Crossbowmen are depicted in deep blue tunics with black and white striped hose, their uniforms reflecting the colors of Freiburg’s heraldry. Their feathered caps, precision-cut garments, and disciplined stance emphasize the structured organization of medieval mercenary units. At the forefront stands their commander, holding a halberd while overseeing his men, who are lined up in perfect formation, each gripping a well-crafted crossbow.
Facing them, the Strasbourg Riflemen wear striking red and white uniforms, matching the city’s flag. Their polished metal helmets, adorned with plumes, contrast with their white waist belts and red doublets. Each soldier holds an early firearm—likely an arquebus or matchlock musket—symbolizing the technological shift from bows to firearms in European warfare. Their rigid, battle-ready posture showcases the efficiency and discipline of Swiss and allied military forces during the Renaissance period.
This lithograph beautifully captures the Romantic-era fascination with medieval and early modern military history, emphasizing the pride, order, and traditions of Swiss and allied forces. The contrast between the crossbowmen and the riflemen serves as a reminder of Switzerland’s ability to adapt and evolve militarily, reinforcing its defensive strength throughout history. The detailed shading, vibrant hand coloring, and precise rendering of clothing and weaponry highlight the high craftsmanship of 19th-century lithographic artistry.
Condition Summary:
The lithograph is in very good condition, with strong, vivid hand coloring that enhances the composition. Minor signs of age, such as light foxing in the margins, do not interfere with the overall clarity of the image. The paper remains firm and well-preserved, making this a highly valuable collectible.
Framing Tips:
For the best display, use a high-quality frame with UV-protected museum glass or acrylic to preserve the colors. A wide mat border in neutral or warm tones will complement the vibrant blue and red hues of the uniforms. A dark wooden or gold-accented frame will enhance the historical significance of the artwork. To maintain its longevity, archival mounting materials should be used.
