About the Item
Paul to Timothy Engraving – St. Paul Foretells Death
Martyrdom c.1735
Description:
This powerful antique engraving titled “The II Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy” depicts the Apostle Paul seated with a halo, holding a quill and scroll, symbolising his final teachings and writings before his impending martyrdom. Above him in the sky, surrounded by radiant clouds, is a crowned stone tablet, representing the eternal reward and divine authority of his teachings. At the bottom, the caption reads: “St. Paul foretels his own Death
Martyrdom,
warns Timothy against Hereticks.” To the left side of the image, broken chains and a shackle lie on the ground, further symbolising Paul’s imprisonment and ultimate liberation through faith.
This engraving was produced around 1735, most likely in London, as part of a large illustrated family Bible or theological compendium. It was engraved using the copperplate technique, a method renowned for its ability to capture fine linear detail and delicate shading, giving life to religious scenes with depth and reverence. Such plates were commonly created by skilled engravers working after designs by prominent Bible illustrators like Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, though this plate is unsigned.
Prints like these are highly collectable for their theological significance and their role in Protestant family education. They served as daily reminders of faith, resilience in persecution, and the importance of doctrinal purity as taught by Paul in his letters to Timothy. The print’s emblematic style, combining portraiture with allegorical symbols, made it a visual sermon for household devotion.
Condition summary:
Good condition overall. The paper shows minor age toning, light foxing in the margins, and a small tear at the top right edge without loss to the image. The plate impression remains clear and strong with fine engraved details well preserved.
Framing tips:
Frame this engraving in a dark wood or black frame with gold inner lining to emphasise its classical religious theme. Use a warm ivory or light beige mount board to complement the antique paper tone. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve its fine lines. This piece will display beautifully in a study, prayer room, or as part of a curated religious print collection on a gallery wall.
