A finely detailed architectural engraving by Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764–1846) depicting the Portique Corinthien de la cour du Château d’Écouen—the grand Corinthian portico of the Château d’Écouen near Paris. Executed around 1790–1800, this work captures the harmony and monumentality of the French Renaissance style through precise linear engraving and masterful shading.
The engraving shows the symmetrical façade of the château’s courtyard elevation, framed by paired Corinthian columns supporting an ornate entablature richly decorated with classical motifs including laurel wreaths, shields, and garlands. Baltard’s rendering demonstrates a deep understanding of both proportion and decorative rhythm, qualities that align with his architectural philosophy and teaching at the École des Beaux-Arts.
The Château d’Écouen, constructed in the mid-16th century for Anne de Montmorency, is one of the finest examples of French Renaissance architecture.
