Payne, a London publisher active at 12 Paternoster Row during the early 19th century. Such portraits were intended for music lovers and cultivated households, celebrating Mozart’s status as one of the greatest composers of the Classical era. His music, from operas such as *Don Giovanni* and *The Magic Flute* to symphonies, concertos, and chamber works, had already achieved legendary status by the early 19th century, and images such as this helped solidify his cultural immortality.
