About the Item
Pupilles of the Imperial Guard, Napoleonic Military Uniform Print, Paris 1843
This finely executed hand-coloured military print depicts a Pupille of the Imperial Guard, one of the youngest and most symbolic formations associated with Napoleon’s army. The Pupilles were originally orphaned sons of soldiers, raised, educated, and trained under military discipline, embodying Napoleon’s vision of loyalty, merit, and the continuity of the Empire. Although not front-line troops, they represented the moral and ideological future of the Grande Armée and held a powerful place in Napoleonic iconography.
The figure is shown in full standing uniform, resting his musket beside a low stone wall, set within a sparse landscape. The dark green coat with contrasting facings, tall shako with insignia, and neatly rendered equipment are depicted with great precision. The calm, almost reflective posture distinguishes this image from more overtly martial scenes, emphasizing discipline, training, and imperial identity rather than combat. The careful hand-colouring highlights the uniform details while preserving the clarity of the engraved line.
This print was published in Paris in 1843 as part of *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, illustrated after designs by Horace Vernet, one of the most celebrated painters of Napoleonic military subjects. Although the uniforms represent the period circa 1810–1812, the 1843 publication reflects the strong revival of Napoleonic memory during the July Monarchy, when collectors and veterans sought authoritative visual records of the Empire.
Highly decorative and historically evocative, this sheet is particularly appealing to collectors of Napoleonic history, French military costume, and Imperial Guard material. It also works exceptionally well as a standalone interior piece or as part of a larger group of Napoleonic uniform prints.
Condition
Good overall condition. Light age toning to the paper, minor scattered foxing, and soft handling wear at the margins. Image clean and well preserved. Blank verso. Plate mark visible.
Framing tips
This print presents beautifully in a classic black, dark walnut, or gilt frame with an off-white or light grey mount. A slightly wider mat enhances the quiet dignity of the subject and allows the central figure to stand out against the generous margins.
