Antique Engraving of Lima, Cathedral and Plaza Mayor, 1867
Detailed 19th-century engraving titled Lima, published in 1867. The view captures the grand Plaza Mayor of the Peruvian capital, dominated by the imposing façade of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Lima with its twin towers. The cathedral, originally begun in the 16th century and reconstructed multiple times after earthquakes, stands as one of the most significant colonial monuments in South America. Behind it, the city stretches toward the Andes mountains, creating a dramatic backdrop.
In the foreground, elegantly dressed figures walk across the plaza, while others gather in groups, illustrating daily urban life. The engraving reflects both the architectural splendor of Lima’s colonial core and its importance as a political and religious center in Spanish America.
Engraved by Ed. Willmann and printed by Ch. Chardon in Paris, this work formed part of a series of engraved views of Latin American cities published in the mid-19th century for European audiences. These engravings combined artistic precision with documentary value, serving as visual records of the New World’s key capitals.
Condition: Very good, with some light age-related toning and foxing in the margins. Plate impression sharp and clear. Blank verso. Please review the image carefully.
