About the Item

Antique Engraving of Santo Domingo, Buenos Aires, 1867 Engraving titled Santo Domingo à Buenos-Ayres, published in 1867. This finely executed view presents the Dominican convent and church of Santo Domingo in Buenos Aires, one of the city’s most prominent colonial landmarks. The composition captures the façade with its baroque details and the adjoining bell tower, while a statue in the foreground dominates the square. The scene is lively with figures engaged in daily activity, including pedestrians and musicians, reflecting the vibrant atmosphere of Buenos Aires in the mid-19th century. The engraving offers a glimpse of the city’s cultural and religious life at a time when it was establishing itself as the leading metropolis of Argentina. Drawn by Lebreton, engraved by P. Delaunay, and printed by Ch. Chardon in Paris, this work belongs to a rare series of South American views prepared for European audiences, emphasizing both architectural beauty and urban life. Condition: Very good, with light foxing around the margins and minor toning consistent with age. The plate impression remains sharp with fine detail. Blank verso. Please study the image carefully. Framing tips: A neutral ivory or cream mount will balance the tonal contrasts, while a black or dark wood frame enhances the architectural lines. For a more classical presentation, a gilt frame will emphasize the historic and religious significance of the subject. Technique: Engraving on paper Maker: Drawn by Lebreton, engraved by P. Delaunay, printed by Ch. Chardon, Paris, 1867
