Antique Engraving of Valparaíso, Harbor and City View, 1867
Detailed 19th-century engraving titled Valparaiso, published in 1867. The panoramic view captures Chile’s principal port city from an elevated hillside, looking across the bay toward the harbor crowded with sailing ships and steamers. In the foreground, palm trees and rural paths with figures and pack animals contrast with the dense urban sprawl of the port city beyond. Warehouses, churches, and civic buildings line the shore, while forts and hills enclose the harbor on both sides.
Engraved by Ed. Willmann and printed by Ch. Chardon, Paris, this engraving belongs to a series of Latin American city views created for European audiences fascinated by the Pacific world. By the mid-19th century, Valparaíso had become one of the busiest ports on the Pacific coast, serving as a major stopover for ships rounding Cape Horn and an important gateway for trade and immigration. Its thriving waterfront and cosmopolitan character are vividly suggested in this image.
Condition: Very good, with light toning and foxing in the margins. The impression is sharp with crisp engraved details. Blank verso. Please review the image carefully.
