About the Item
Christ and Nicodemus by Night / Christ and the Samaritan Woman at the Well, Pieter Mortier, ca. 1700
This fine engraved sheet presents two biblical scenes from the Gospel of John, published by Pieter Mortier around 1700. The upper image illustrates the encounter of Christ with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews, who comes to Him secretly by night to inquire about spiritual rebirth (John 3:1–21). The intimate setting emphasizes secrecy and contemplation, with Christ seated across from Nicodemus at a round table, a single candle symbolizing the light of truth in darkness.
The lower image depicts Christ’s conversation with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well (John 4:1–26). Here, Christ offers her “living water” as a metaphor for eternal life. The Samaritan woman, depicted leaning on her water jug, listens intently while Christ gestures in divine teaching. In the background, the disciples approach, underscoring the narrative moment.
Both engravings are captioned in Dutch and French, reflecting Mortier’s Amsterdam publishing activity and his appeal to a broad European audience. These prints exemplify the Baroque engraving style, with careful linear work, dramatic contrasts, and symbolic details that heighten the narrative.
Condition report: Very good impression on laid paper with strong plate marks. Light age-related toning and minor handling marks, otherwise clean and well-preserved. Wide margins.
Framing tips: These paired biblical scenes are well-suited for presentation in a single large frame with a double mount. Use a soft ivory or cream mat to balance the tones, with a thin gilt inner line to emphasize the sacred subject. A dark wood or ebonized frame will provide classical weight, while a gilded frame highlights the Baroque richness of the engravings.
