About the Item

Red-Legged Partridge Pair – Antique Bird Chromolithograph, Caccabis rufa c.1880 This finely colored ornithological print depicts a male and female red-legged partridge (Caccabis rufa), shown in a natural landscape setting with grasses, low vegetation, and an open horizon. The composition presents the cock bird standing alert on slightly higher ground, while the hen is positioned below, creating a balanced and naturalistic scene that reflects late 19th-century approaches to bird illustration. The red-legged partridge—also known as the French partridge or common red-leg partridge—is native to southern Europe and was widely studied and illustrated during the 19th century, particularly in German and Central European ornithological works. The species is easily recognized by its coral-red bill and legs, boldly patterned flanks, and contrasting facial markings, all of which are rendered here with great care and accuracy. This print was produced as a chromolithograph, a technique that allowed for rich, layered color and subtle tonal transitions. The soft greens of the landscape, the warm browns and greys of the plumage, and the distinctive red accents combine to create an image that is both scientifically informative and highly decorative. Such plates were intended not only for study but also for display, reflecting the period’s fascination with natural history as both science and art. Well suited for collectors of antique bird prints, sporting and game bird imagery, or natural history illustration, this work also appeals strongly to interior designers. It fits beautifully into country houses, libraries, studies, or refined contemporary interiors where its calm palette and elegant subject add warmth and character. Condition report: Good antique condition. Light foxing and mild age-related toning visible in the margins, consistent with chromolithographs of this period. Image area remains clean and vibrant. No major tears or losses observed. Framing tips: Frame with a wide off-white or light oatmeal mat and a simple dark wood, walnut, or black frame. This enhances the color contrast and gives the print a classic, museum-style presentation. White Eye-browed Partridges: Hand-colored Folio-sized Bird Lithograph by Gould
By John Gould
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithograph entitled "Dendrortyx Leucophrys" (White Eye-browed Partridges) by John Gould, published in his monograph 'A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America' in London between 1844-1850. Reportedly only 250 copies were printed. The print depicts two partridges, one standing and the other lying apparently on sand, surrounded by high grass. A landscape of plants and possibly water is seen in the background. This beautiful hand-colored lithograph is presented in a double cream-colored mat. There is one tiny spot in the left lower corner, faint spots in the right upper print and mild toning about the periphery which is covered by the mat. It is otherwise in excellent condition. It is accompanied by the original text page. John Gould (1841-1881) was an English contemporary of the American John James Audubon. Gould published his first illustrated book on birds in 1831 entitled "A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains", followed by "Ramphastidae" and "Birds of Europe". He then extended the scope of his travels and research to include Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea, drawing birds in their natural habitat. Artists, such as his wife Elizabeth Gould, Henry Richter and Edward Lear, transferred his drawings to hand printed and hand colored stone lithographs, which are known for their beauty, detail and accuracy. As well as an exceptional and prolific artist, Gould was an outstanding scientific naturalist. In approximately 50 years he created approximately 3,000 lithographs of birds...
