About the Item
Renaissance Ornament Print – 16th-Century Candlestick and Urn Designs, Plate LXIV
This richly colored 19th-century chromolithograph from L’Ornement Polychrome (Plate LXIV) showcases an array of elegant and imaginative candlesticks, torches, and urns inspired by 16th-century Renaissance design. Lithographed by Durin and printed by Firmin-Didot Frères in Paris, it exemplifies the period’s fascination with ornament, symmetry, and allegory.
Against a deep black background that enhances their intricate detailing, over thirty ornamental elements are displayed in vertical rows. These objects are not merely utilitarian forms but fantastical compositions blending art and architecture. They are adorned with:
– Mythological figures such as satyrs, sirens, and cherubs
– Architectural motifs including volutes, columns, and pediments
– Botanical flourishes with stylized leaves, flames, acanthus scrolls, and flower bouquets
– Heraldic and religious imagery including angels, crosses, urns, masks, and flaming altars
Many of the candlestick-like forms are crowned with stylized flames or floral finials, suggesting ceremonial or votive use. Others include surreal sculptural details such as winged busts, animal heads, or interwoven serpents.
This plate is a valuable reference for artists, designers, or collectors interested in Renaissance interior decoration, furniture design, or religious ornamentation. It captures the Renaissance spirit of integrating classical themes with inventive, fantastical detailing.
Condition: Excellent. Strong original colors with minimal age wear. Slight toning to margins, but the image area remains crisp and well-preserved.
Framing tips: Best suited to a dark wood or gilt frame with a narrow mat. A black or deep burgundy background will echo the plate’s original contrast, while a gold mat line can highlight the ornamental gilding.
