About the Artist
René Gruau (1909–2004) was one of the most influential fashion illustrators of the 20th century. Best known for his long-standing collaboration with Christian Dior, Gruau defined the visual identity of haute couture in the 1940s–1960s. His work appeared regularly in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and L’Officiel, and his posters for fashion houses, cabarets, and luxury brands remain enduring icons of graphic design.
Gruau’s art is celebrated for its economy of line, dramatic negative space, and emotional immediacy—qualities that place him at the intersection of fine art, fashion, and modernist illustration.
About the Printer
Mourlot Studios (Atelier Mourlot), Paris, is one of the most prestigious lithographic printers of the 20th century. Founded in 1852, the atelier collaborated with masters such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Joan Miró, and Marc Chagall. The Mourlot blind stamp on this work confirms its origin from this historic workshop and underscores the exceptional technical quality of the print.

René Gruau astounds us simply by the immensity of his work, his modernity, his simplicity and his utter elegance. He is a virtuoso performer of the greatest names in fashion, the most prestigious brands, the most colourful shows. but the artist has the elegance to stay behind his works. His talent and his highly personal style shine through... In the 1990's there were exhibitions of his work in Germany, Japan, Monaco and France. The largest retrospective was organized by the Advertising Museum in Paris in 1999. It was called, simply, ''Passionately Gruau.''
