About the Item

Republican General and His Guide 1795, Napoleonic Era Military Uniform Print This finely hand-colored 19th-century engraving depicts a Republican general and his guide as uniformed in 1795, during the turbulent years of the French Revolutionary Wars that directly preceded the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. The composition shows two figures in conversation: the general in a richly detailed blue coat with ornate gold decoration, sash, and bicorne hat with tricolor plume, accompanied by his guide or aide in contrasting light infantry dress. The setting, suggested by rocky terrain and minimal landscape, emphasizes command, movement, and the realities of campaigning. The print originates from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843, and is after designs by Horace Vernet. Vernet was the pre-eminent military artist of 19th-century France, celebrated for his authoritative and visually compelling representations of Revolutionary and Napoleonic uniforms. His work combined artistic flair with documentary precision, making these plates valuable references for both historians and collectors. Although the uniforms shown date to 1795, the engraving itself belongs to the later Napoleonic revival period, reflecting France’s enduring fascination with the origins of Napoleon’s army and leadership culture. Such images were intended to illustrate the continuity between the Revolutionary generals and the later imperial command structure under Napoleon. This print is well suited to collectors of Napoleonic and Revolutionary War material, students of military costume, and interior designers seeking authentic French military imagery with strong historical narrative. Condition report: Good condition overall. Light age toning and scattered foxing, primarily in the margins and background. The hand coloring remains strong and clear. No major tears or losses observed. Wide margins. Framing tips: A dark wood or ebonized frame with a light cream or pale grey mat will enhance the vivid colors while maintaining a refined, period-appropriate presentation. Works particularly well when paired with related Revolutionary or Napoleonic uniform prints. Technique: Hand-colored engraving Maker: After Horace Vernet, France, Paris, 1843
