About the Item
Roman Statues and Coins, Composite Antiquities Plate with Center Fold, 1721
Description:
This large and visually rich engraving is a composite antiquarian study plate from the first English edition of Bernard de Montfaucon’s celebrated work Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures, published in London in 1721. The plate brings together a wide array of Roman sculptural subjects, including standing and seated statues, relief fragments, and a series of ancient coins and medallions, all carefully arranged as a comparative visual survey of classical antiquity.
The engravings are based on ancient Roman originals, many of which were documented and interpreted through the scholarship of Giovanni Pietro Bellori, the influential Italian antiquarian and art historian whose work underpinned much of Montfaucon’s research. While the book itself was printed in London, the artistic and intellectual origin of the imagery lies firmly in Italy and the Roman tradition of antiquarian study.
Such composite plates were intended as reference sheets for scholars, artists, architects, and collectors, offering a condensed overview of classical forms, iconography, and sculptural types. Today, they are especially appreciated for their encyclopedic character and refined engraving, making them well suited to libraries, studies, architectural offices, and classical or museum-inspired interiors. The balance between large figural statues and smaller numismatic details gives the sheet both visual rhythm and strong decorative presence.
This example comes from the same 1721 volume as the other plates in this series and represents an authentic, early English issue of Montfaucon’s monumental publication.
Condition report:
Good overall condition. A vertical center fold is present, as issued, typical for wide plates from this publication. Light overall age toning and minor edge wear consistent with age. No paper breaks, losses, or repairs observed. Plate impression remains clear and well-defined.
Framing tips:
This plate works particularly well in a wide frame with a generous off-white or soft cream mat to balance the horizontal composition. A dark wood, walnut, or ebonized frame will enhance the scholarly and classical character, while a slim black or bronze-toned frame suits more contemporary interiors with classical references.
