Jean-Emile Buland was born in Paris in 1857 into a family of artists. His father, Jean-Marie Buland (1825-1895), was an engraver and his brother, Jean-Eugène (1852-1926), was a painter. Jean-Emile Buland studied under the painter Alexandre Cabanel and the engraver Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont. He won the 1st Grand Prix de Rome for engraving in 1880. He received a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition and a first-class medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1901.
Antoine Calbet, born August 16, 1860 in Engayrac (Lot-et-Garonne) and died August 21, 1942 in Paris, was a French painter, watercolorist, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier by Édouard-Antoine Marsal (1845-1929), where he learned drawing, this draftsman and illustrator, a painter of nudes and romantic scenes, was sought after during his lifetime. He was then admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). He was a member of the Fine Arts admissions jury from 1913 to 1930. He began exhibiting in 1880 and became a member of the Society of French Artists. He was a friend of French President Armand Fallières.
He received several medals at the Salon des Artistes Français and a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition for his work on a panel for the pavilion of the Ministry of Colonies.
The French Society of Friends of the Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Drake, André Fallières, Louis Lévy, Paul Louchet, Maurice Moisset, Louis Montagné...

Antique engraving of Windsor Bridge on the Thames, Tombleson, c.1832–1834
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique engraving of Windsor Bridge on the Thames, Tombleson, c.1832–1834
This detailed antique engraving depicts the old Windsor Bridge, a three-arched crossing over the River Thames linking Windsor in Berkshire with Eton in Buckinghamshire. The bridge was a vital crossing point in the early 19th century, carrying both pedestrians and traffic across the river. In this composition, the bridge is shown with a horse-drawn cart and several figures making their way across, while activity on the water and along the riverbanks brings additional life to the scene.
In the foreground, a barge with a furled sail moves slowly beneath the bridge, manned by boatmen engaged in their work. To the right, figures in brightly colored dress gather by the riverbank, one leaning on a pole near the water’s edge while others attend to daily activities. The houses and riverside buildings frame the view, adding to the sense of a bustling riverside townscape. The whole scene is animated by the interplay of people, architecture, and the flowing Thames, presenting Windsor as both a place of commerce and community.
The drawing is by William Tombleson (1795–1846), a leading English topographical draughtsman whose series Views of the Thames and Medway (published between 1832 and 1834) was highly admired for its combination of accuracy and artistic style. The engraving was executed by Charles Mottram...
