This refined 19th-century view depicts the Piazza e Basilica dei Santi Apostoli in Rome, one of the city’s historically important civic and ecclesiastical spaces. The composition is taken from Philippe Benoist’s celebrated series Rome dans sa grandeur, published in Paris by H. Charpentier between 1867 and 1869, a landmark work in architectural and topographical lithography.
Benoist presents the square with clarity and balance, showing the Basilica of the Twelve Holy Apostles alongside the palazzi Odescalchi and Colonna. The architectural precision is complemented by lively staffage figures—pedestrians, clergy, and carriages—that animate the open space and give a vivid sense of everyday Roman life in the late Papal era.
