About the Item
Rotterdam from the Ferry – Stanfield Sketches, Boys after Stanfield, 1833
Description:
This atmospheric 19th-century view depicts Rotterdam as seen from the ferry crossing the River Maas, capturing the city’s skyline with church towers, a windmill, and harbour structures rising in the distance. In the foreground, an old wooden vessel lies beached or under repair, while a fisherman tends to fish traps beside the water’s edge, grounding the scene in the everyday working life of the port. The composition balances maritime labour with an expansive urban backdrop, a hallmark of early Romantic topographical art.
The print belongs to the celebrated series known as the Stanfield Sketches, based on drawings by Clarkson Stanfield, one of the foremost British marine painters of the 19th century. The lithograph was executed by Thomas Shotter Boys, a master of tone lithography whose work is distinguished by its subtle gradations, architectural clarity, and refined crayon-like handling. Boys’ technique allows the scene to retain the immediacy of a sketch while achieving the depth and permanence of a finished print.
Published in 1833, this view records Rotterdam before the dramatic industrial and urban transformations of the later 19th century. The low, spreading skyline, active river traffic, and visible windmills reflect the city’s dual identity as a historic mercantile centre and a working harbour. Prints from the Stanfield Sketches series are sought after for their artistic quality, documentary value, and strong appeal in both classical and contemporary interiors.
