About the Item

Royal Swedish Dragoon Corps – Cavalry Uniforms, Stockholm, c.1800 This finely executed hand-colored military print depicts mounted soldiers of the Royal Swedish Dragoon Corps, shown in formal procession and uniform order. Produced in Stockholm and attributed to P. Hallberg, the sheet presents a clear and systematic overview of Swedish cavalry dress and equipment at the turn of the 19th century, a period marked by reform and professionalization within European armies. The composition is arranged in two horizontal registers, each showing a sequence of dragoons mounted on horses of varying colors, advancing at a measured pace. The repetition of figures allows for close comparison of uniforms, posture, and accoutrements, while subtle variations in horse color and stance introduce rhythm and visual balance. One figure is shown sounding a trumpet, emphasizing the ceremonial and organizational function of cavalry units. Uniform details are rendered with precision: dark blue coats with contrasting yellow facings, plumed helmets, sabers, saddlecloths, and belts are carefully delineated and hand colored. The riders sit upright in disciplined formation, reflecting both the military ideals of order and the aesthetic conventions of uniform plates intended for documentation and instruction. The horses are drawn with sensitivity to anatomy and movement, reinforcing the importance of cavalry within Swedish military culture. The title at the top of the sheet identifies the unit as the “Kongl. Lif-Regimentets Dragon-Corps,” the Royal Life Regiment Dragoon Corps, an elite formation within the Swedish army. Such prints were commonly issued as part of series illustrating national regiments and were used by officers, collectors, and institutions to record official dress and organization. Swedish military uniform prints of this quality are less frequently encountered than their French, British, or German counterparts, enhancing the appeal of this example. This work is of particular interest to collectors of military history, cavalry imagery, Scandinavian history, and early uniform studies. Its orderly composition and restrained color palette also make it highly suitable for interior display, especially when paired with other military or equestrian subjects. Condition Good overall condition. Light age toning to the paper and minor handling wear consistent with age. Original hand coloring remains clear and attractive. Margins present. A vertical centerfold as issued, typical for prints of this type. No major tears, losses, or restorations observed. Framing tips This print benefits from a wide, neutral mat to emphasize the horizontal format and maintain visual clarity between the two registers. A light wood, walnut, or dark-stained frame works well, depending on the desired interior style. Museum or UV-filtering glass is recommended to protect the original hand coloring. The elongated format makes it particularly effective as a statement piece above furniture or in a gallery wall arrangement. Technique: Hand-colored engraving Maker: P.
