About the Item
Sakamoto Koichi, 46/70 B. 1932 Evening Winter Landscape Print
Print (sight) 6 x 3.5"
Ebonized Wood Frame 12" x 9.5" x 1"
An exceptional work by Sakamoto Koichiin, featuring a serene winter night scene. The image depicts a house with a snow-covered roof under the moonlight, surrounded by bare trees. The monochromatic tone adds a tranquil, almost ethereal atmosphere to the composition. This work is a limited edition print, as indicated by the signature of Sakamoto Koichiin in the lower right corner; the lower left corner bears the edition (46/70), which signifies it is the 46th print in an edition of 70.
The minimalist black frame and soft matting complement the artwork's subtle tones, making it an ideal decorative piece for contemporary, minimalist, or rustic interiors. The size of the print and the framing suggest it would fit well in smaller spaces.
Sakamoto Koichi (born 1932 in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan) is a distinguished figure in modern Japanese printmaking. Initially trained in Japanese-style painting around 1953, he transitioned to self-taught printmaking by 1955. His early works were showcased at the Shinseisaku-kyokai Exhibition in 1957, and by 1960, he began exhibiting at the Japan Print Association's annual shows. From 1966 onwards, Sakamoto's copperplate prints featured in both the Shunyokai and Japan Print Association exhibitions, leading to his first solo exhibition in 1967.
Technically, Sakamoto excels in etching and mezzotint techniques, producing limited editions typically ranging from 50 to 100 prints, all signed and numbered in pencil. His work has been prominently featured in galleries such as Yoseido during the 1970s and 1980s, solidifying his influence on contemporary Japanese art.
