About the Item
Antique Chromolithographs of Scarborough Lily, Jacobean Lily
Clivia Miniata – 1897
A striking set of three original chromolithographs published in 1897 in Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse by Edward Step. These finely detailed plates, drawn by botanical artist B. Herincq, capture the exotic beauty of flowering plants from different parts of the world.
The first print (Plate 261) shows the Scarborough Lily (Vallota purpurea), a bulbous perennial originating from South Africa, known for its clusters of brilliant scarlet trumpet-shaped blooms. Its elegant roots and bulb structure are depicted alongside the flower in scientific detail.
The second print (Plate 262) depicts the Jacobean Lily (Sprekelia formosissima), sometimes called the Aztec lily, another South American species much prized for its deep crimson, orchid-like blossoms with elongated, recurved petals. This chromolithograph highlights the dramatic shape of the flower as well as its striking coloration.
The third plate (Plate 263) presents Clivia miniata, native to South Africa and admired for its umbels of vivid orange-red flowers with contrasting yellow throats. These long-lasting blooms rise above glossy strap-shaped leaves, making it a favorite in conservatories and gardens worldwide.
Together, these three chromolithographs celebrate the diversity and splendor of flowering bulbs and perennials at the turn of the 20th century, combining horticultural accuracy with decorative appeal.
Condition report: Very good. Strong impressions with vibrant original colors. Some minor age-related toning in the margins, not affecting the illustrations. Plates retain sharp detail. These prints are sold in a set, but not framed.
Framing tips: These prints will look stunning framed as a set. A natural wood or black frame paired with a soft cream or off-white mat will highlight the vivid reds and oranges of the blooms. For a bold presentation, a deep green mat can enhance the botanical character and tie the three images together.
