It captures an episode from 1805 in Vienna, when the elderly and ailing composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) was honored with a musical tribute.
In the scene, a lively group of friends, admirers, and musicians gathers outside Haydn’s residence to perform a serenade in his honor. Soldiers and civilians mingle in the crowd, while curious neighbors lean out of the windows above to watch the event. Haydn himself, frail but smiling, is seen at the doorway or window, acknowledging the gesture. The composition balances architectural detail with the warmth of human interaction, emphasizing the affection and respect felt for Haydn in the final years of his life.
Hegi’s engraving is both a celebration of a musical genius and a charming document of Viennese social life in the early 19th century. It is part of a tradition of commemorative artworks that immortalized cultural icons in moments of public tribute.
