Set of three original antique fish prints. Sea lamprey eel, Petromyzon marinus 1, mouth 2, river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis 3,4, and brook lamprey, Lampetra planeri 5. Electric eel, Electrophorus electricus 63, moray eel, 64 spotted snake-eel 68, pearlfish, Carapus acus 69, and banded knifefish, Gymnotus carapo 70.
These prints originate from 'Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte: Der Fische erster Theil, Volume 5' by Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm. Published 1832. Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758 – 1811) was a Protestant pastor and natural history writer, and the son of Christian Art Wilhelm, an art dealer and publisher in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany.
These engravings are from the fish section of Wilhelm’s monumental 25 volume work on Natural History. Published from 1777 through to the 1800s, with a total of 1469 exquisite illustrations by the renowned engravers of Augsburg’s famous print empire, once known as the European Image Factory.
