Set of four original antique fish prints. Dragonet, Callionymus lyra 80,81. Sterlet sturgeon, Acipenser ruthenus 29, and underside 30. Star gazer, Uranoscopus scaber 82 and great weaver fish, Trachinus draco 83. Red band-fish, Cepola macrophthalma 109, sharksucker, Echeneis naucrates 110, and remora, Remora remora 111.
These prints originate from 'Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte: Der Fische erster Theil, Volume 5' by Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm. Published 1832. Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758 – 1811) was a Protestant pastor and natural history writer, and the son of Christian Art Wilhelm, an art dealer and publisher in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany.
These engravings are from the fish section of Wilhelm’s monumental 25 volume work on Natural History. Published from 1777 through to the 1800s, with a total of 1469 exquisite illustrations by the renowned engravers of Augsburg’s famous print empire, once known as the European Image Factory.
