About the Item

Set of 8 Antique Botanical Engravings of Bromus (Brome Grasses), c.1830 This striking set of eight early 19th-century botanical engravings features several expressive species of Bromus, commonly known as brome grasses—one of the most graceful and sculptural grass groups in the European flora. Published circa 1830, the plates capture the arching seed heads, slender stems, and dynamic silhouettes characteristic of the genus, rendered with the precision and subtlety expected from English botanical engraving of this period. The set includes Bromus mollis, Bromus racemosus, Bromus squarrosus, Bromus secalinus, Bromus arvensis, and Bromus sterilis, among others. Each plate combines delicate line engraving with refined hand coloring, highlighting the distinctive drooping spikelets and feathery textures that make brome grasses particularly appealing for decorative display. The accompanying botanical details—florets, glumes, seeds—are engraved with scientific accuracy and add depth and authenticity to each sheet. With their matching format and harmonious vertical composition, these eight plates form a beautifully cohesive group. When framed as a set, they create a rhythmic, airy display perfect for garden rooms, hallways, cottages, country houses, Scandinavian interiors, or any setting that benefits from natural textures and botanical elegance. Condition Report: Good antique condition with light age toning, scattered foxing, and minor margin wear associated with early 19th-century prints. Strong visible plate marks on all sheets. No tears or repairs. Coloring remains soft and well preserved. Framing Tips: Warm white or ivory mats paired with natural wood frames—birch, oak, ash, or light walnut—bring out the fine engraving lines and organic shapes. For a more traditional look, slim gilded frames suit the botanical style perfectly. Leave the plate impression visible for maximum authenticity. Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand coloring Maker: James Sowerby, London, c.1830
