About the Item

Set of 8 Antique Botanical Engravings of Cottongrass, Reed Grass Coastal Species, c.1830 This elegant set of eight antique botanical engravings features a beautifully balanced selection of British wetland and coastal grasses, created around 1830 in the refined natural-history style of the early nineteenth century. The group includes several species of Eriophorum (cottongrass), alongside Eleocharis, Phalaris, and Ammophila (marram grass), each illustrated with precise botanical detail and subtle hand coloring. The first plates depict Eriophorum species, instantly recognizable by their soft, white, cotton-like seed heads that float above slender stems. These engravings highlight the graceful movement and airy texture that make cottongrass an iconic plant of marshes and moorlands. The following plates include Eleocharis and related sedge forms, showing the fine structure of their stems, roots, and clustered spikelets. The later engravings depict robust grasses such as Phalaris arundinacea (reed canary grass) and Ammophila arenaria (marram grass), the latter known for its essential role in stabilizing coastal sand dunes. Their tall, architectural bloom spikes and detailed botanical dissections create a striking visual rhythm, offering a contrast to the delicate cottongrass species earlier in the set. Together, these eight prints form a cohesive botanical ensemble, unified by their vertical composition, clear plate marks, consistent paper tone, and refined engraving style. The mix of soft, flowing forms and strong, upright seed heads makes the set especially suitable for framing in contemporary interiors, nature-inspired spaces, or coastal homes. Condition Report: Good condition, with gentle age toning and occasional foxing typical of early nineteenth-century paper. Plate marks crisp on all sheets. Minor, expected edge wear; no significant tears or losses. Suitable for immediate framing. Framing Tips: These engravings look excellent in narrow natural-wood, ash, or birch frames for a clean, modern presentation. Warm white or ivory mats brighten the paper tone and complement the soft greens and browns. For a more classic style, slim gilt frames enhance the botanical detailing and add a refined historical touch. Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand coloring Maker: James Sowerby, London, c.1830
