Set of 8 Antique Botanical Engravings of Crocus, Iris and Fedia Species, c.1830 This elegant set of eight antique botanical engravings presents a refined selection of early nineteenth-century flowering plants, illustrated with the exquisite precision typical of British natural history art around 1830. The group includes two plates of Fedia (also known as Corn Salad), followed by a beautifully detailed series of Crocus and Iris species in soft hand coloring. These engravings combine graceful floral forms with analytical botanical figures, offering both scientific accuracy and strong decorative appeal. The first two plates depict Fedia olitoria and Fedia dentata, showing the plant’s branching habit, small clustered blossoms, and finely drawn foliage. These are followed by four superb Crocus plates, including Crocus sativus, the species historically associated with the production of saffron; Crocus vernus, the familiar spring crocus; and Crocus nudiflorus, with its soft purple petals and distinctive corm structure. Each is rendered with delicate hand coloring in shades of violet, lavender, and yellow, accompanied by small dissected details that highlight the plant’s floral anatomy. The final two engravings feature Iris species, including the brilliant yellow Iris pseudacorus and the elegant, pale blue Iris spuria (or a closely related species). These plates stand out for their vibrant color and tall, architectural composition, making them especially appealing for framing and display. Together, the eight engravings share a harmonious vertical format, consistent paper tone, and clear plate marks. The vivid floral palette—ranging from deep saffron yellow to soft lilac—creates a balanced and highly decorative grouping. Condition Report: Good condition overall, with natural age toning and some light foxing consistent with early nineteenth-century paper.
