About the Item

Set of 8 Antique Botanical Engravings of Sedges, Rushes and Wetland Plants, c.1830 This set of eight antique botanical engravings presents a distinctive collection of British wetland and marsh plants, illustrated with the precision and understated elegance characteristic of early nineteenth-century natural history art. Created around 1830, these engravings depict several species of sedges and rushes, including Carex, Scirpus, Eleocharis, and related genera. These plants, known for their fine linear forms and textural seed heads, are rendered with a clarity and botanical accuracy that make the plates both scientifically valuable and visually appealing. The engravings show a range of wetland structures—from the compact flowering heads of Scirpus to the slender, upright blades of Eleocharis and the tufted inflorescences typical of Carex species. Each plant is complemented by small analytical figures illustrating seeds, spikelets, and floral structures, emphasizing the careful study that defined early botanical illustration. The hand coloring, used selectively throughout the set, highlights the warm brown, russet, and olive tones of the seed clusters while preserving the clean engraved linework that characterizes the group. Together, the eight plates form a cohesive visual ensemble, with matching paper tone, consistent plate marks, and graceful vertical composition. The slender, architectural forms of these wetland plants make the set particularly suited for modern interiors, where their minimalistic elegance complements both natural and contemporary design themes. When arranged in two rows of four, the set becomes an attractive botanical panel, balancing subtle color with fine engraved detail. Condition Report: Good condition, with mild age toning and occasional foxing typical of early nineteenth-century paper. Plate marks are clear on all sheets. Minor edge wear only; no significant tears or losses. Well preserved and very suitable for framing. Framing Tips: The tall, linear character of these engravings pairs exceptionally well with narrow wooden or metal frames. A warm white or ivory mat will brighten the original paper tone and accentuate the subtle hand coloring. For a clean modern look, consider natural oak or ash. For a more classical appearance, slim gilt frames work beautifully. Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand coloring (various plates) Maker: James Sowerby, London, c.1830
