Set of 8 Antique Botanical Engravings of Speedwell Varieties, c.1830 This refined set of eight antique botanical engravings presents a complete grouping of Veronica species—commonly known as Speedwell—illustrated with the precision, clarity, and elegance typical of early 19th-century British botanical art. Created around 1830, these engravings depict multiple varieties of Speedwell in both flowering and leafing stages, showing the diversity of this beloved wild plant family. The set includes beautifully detailed studies of Great Speedwell, Spiked Speedwell, Heath Speedwell, Alpine Speedwell, Water Speedwell, Narrow-leaved Speedwell, and several related forms. Some plates retain their original hand-coloring—most notably the vibrant blue blossoms and delicate pink or lilac forms—while others remain in their original uncolored engraved state, highlighting the fine linework and botanical accuracy that make prints from this period so desirable. Each engraving shows characteristic botanical features: the elongated spires of Spiked Speedwell, the compact clusters of Alpine Speedwell, the low-growing creeping form of Heath Speedwell, and the larger, more robust foliage of Great Speedwell. From slender roots to minute floral anatomy, these prints capture the plant in meticulous scientific detail while preserving the charm of early natural history illustration. Presented together, the eight sheets form a harmonious decorative ensemble with consistent paper tone, matching plate-marks, and similar vertical compositions. Condition Report: Good condition overall with age-appropriate toning and occasional minor spotting. Paper retains a natural 19th-century patina and all sheets display clear plate marks. Some edge wear consistent with age. No tears or significant defects. Excellent for framing. Framing Tips: Speedwell prints look especially striking when framed in light wood (oak, maple) or thin brass or gilt frames. A warm white or pale cream mat brightens the original paper tone and enhances the soft blue and pink blossoms. A double mat can add depth and highlight the plate mark for a museum-quality presentation.
