About the Item
Set of 8 English Botanical Prints 1902 – Teasel
Scabious, Sowerby
This striking and highly decorative set of eight botanical plates originates from the 1902 continuation of English Botany, published in London by the Sowerby firm. The group focuses on members of the Dipsacaceae and related genera, including Lamb’s-lettuce (Valerianella), Teasel (Dipsacus), and Scabious (Scabiosa), presenting a coherent botanical sequence united by structure, palette, and scientific purpose.
Each plate is composed as a full botanical study, showing the plant in its natural habit accompanied by finely rendered details of flower heads, seeds, calyces, and root systems. The tall, architectural forms of the teasels are particularly dramatic, with their spiny heads and elongated stems, while the scabious plates introduce softer spherical blooms in muted blues, purples, and pinks. Together, the set balances strength and delicacy, creating a visually engaging rhythm across the series.
The illustrations are printed in color lithography and finished by hand, retaining the clarity and precision that made *English Botany* one of the most important botanical publications in British history. Founded in the late eighteenth century by James Sowerby, the work continued for generations, and these early twentieth-century plates represent the final, mature phase of traditional botanical illustration before photography became dominant. They combine scientific accuracy with a calm, decorative elegance that translates exceptionally well into interior settings.
Offered as a complete set of eight, these prints are best appreciated together. When framed identically and displayed as a balanced grid or a long horizontal arrangement, they create a refined, museum-like wall with strong decorative presence. This makes the set particularly attractive for interior designers, collectors of natural history imagery, libraries, staircases, hospitality interiors, country houses, or contemporary naturalist spaces. Keeping the group intact preserves the visual dialogue between the plates and significantly enhances their aesthetic and commercial appeal.
Condition report: Overall very good condition. Light, even age toning consistent with early 20th-century paper. Minor scattered foxing or faint surface marks may be present, typical for the period. Plate impressions remain clear and the hand-applied colors are fresh. No major tears, losses, or restorations observed.
Framing tips: Present all eight plates in identical frames to emphasize unity. Dark walnut, ebonized wood, or antique black frames combined with wide ivory or soft off-white mats work particularly well. Maintain consistent spacing for a clean, museum-style display with strong decorative calm.
Technique: Color-printed lithographs with hand-finished color
