About the Item

Victorian Botanical Splendor: Set of 6 Framed Prints by W. Thompson from "The English Flower Garden" (First Edition, 1852–1853) A charming and decorative set of six antique botanical prints by W. Thompson, originating from the First Edition of the mid-19th-century publication The English Flower Garden of Hardy and Half-Hardy Plants (London, 1852–1853). Each plate features a scientific yet artistic grouping of four distinct flowering plants, arranged to showcase the variety of blooms available to the Victorian gardener. The illustrations are finely detailed, capturing the delicate structures of stems, leaves, and petals. Framing: The set is presented in high-quality custom framing designed to complement the botanical subject matter. Each print is double-matted with a cream top mat over a dark green reveal, which draws out the foliage tones in the artwork. They are housed in striking gilt reeded frames that add a touch of formal elegance. Condition: Excellent antique condition. The prints are clean and bright. The frames are in excellent condition. Measurements: Height: 15 1/4 inches (38.7 cm) Width: 12 3/4 inches (32.4 cm) Depth: 1 inch (2.5 cm) Historical Context: Produced during the height of the Victorian "fern craze" and gardening boom, W. Thompson's The English Flower Garden was a monthly periodical intended to instruct amateur gardeners on the best ornamental plants for their flower beds. Unlike the grand folio orchids of the era, these prints focused on accessible, hardy garden flowers, making them historically significant records of the 19th-century domestic garden.
