This set of four framed botanical prints is from Crispin van de Passe’s Hortus Floridus, published in 1614-1616. The Hortus Floridus was a collection of 160 engravings depicting flowering plants, and it was one of the most popular botanical books of the 17th century. The prints in this set are beautifully executed and capture the beauty and diversity of the flowers they depict. The prints are framed in a simple, elegant style that complements the beauty of the flowers. The frames are made of wood and are finished in a dark stain with gilt corners. The prints are matted in cream and are protected by glass. As small in format as Besler’s was large, de Passe’s charming book contains engravings of many common garden flowers… Like Besler, he arranged his book into four parts with each part preceded by a verse.
