About the Item

An exquisite set of four giltwood framed Japanese woodblock prints depicting Yōkai theatrical characters. This series is based on a traditional folk tale, the "Golden Millet Dream." Made by Ryoshu Yamaguchi. Yōkai historically symbolized chaotic, supernatural creatures that reflected anxiety of war, famine, social upheaval, moral lessons, or nature and transformation. In contrast the playful colors and elaborate decoration reflect a celebration of the autumnal season. This particular folk tale tells a Taoist proverb about the illusory and temporary nature of the pursuit of worldly success, as the dream only lasted as long as it took to cook a pot of millet. Set of four with custom archival quality handmade framing with white gold, with a warm glaze. Yamaguchi was renowned for his woodblock prints depicting scenes from the Noh and Kyogen theater. He was active during the Taisho and Showa eras. Each Yōkai have unique patterned and colored clothing with unique masks, accessories, poses, and hair styles. There is a gilt insert between the fabric, mattes, and the outer frames. Black paper covering backs. Woodblock prints. Created in Japan circa 20th century. Each print has a red artists seal after the Japanese characters. Print 1 markings: 黄梁 (Kōryō) "Yellow Millet",夕 (yū/seki)"evening" , 詞 (shi) "poem/story/lyric", 作 (saku) "work/creation." Print 2 markings: 黄梁 (Kōryō), 夕 (yū/seki) , 詞 (shi). Prints 3 and 4 have the Japanese characters. 黄梁 (Kōryō), 夕 (yū/seki) , 詞 (shi) - , 作 (saku). Print 2 seems to have the only minor variation in characters, but overall the lettering expresses the same ideas in each. In good condition. Gentle wear consistent with age and use, especially on some of the frames. The artwork is all in good condition. This elegant and unique set of Japanese artworks would make for a fun conversation starter. Each character tells a vivid history that would add to your home.
