About the Item

A wonderfully decorative and high quality set of three Continental 19th century lithographs. Each handsome lithograph showcases a print of an 18th century Mezzotint by John Smith in London and after the original early 16th century paintings by Titian. Each print depicts a different scene from Greek mythology with the first being of Vulcan the god of fire and the forge with Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and the harvest. Vulcan’s hammer and tools lie at his feet, while Ceres rests amid symbols of abundance, suggesting the harmonious union of industry and fertility. The second print shows Bacchus, the god of wine and ecstatic liberation, embracing Ariadne, the Cretan princess he rescued after her abandonment by Theseus. The scene captures the moment of passionate revelation and divine affection, accompanied by a young satyr holding grapes. The last print displays the handsome Hercules and his wife Deianira, while he is draped in the lion skin and holding his club. Hercules draws Deianira close as a putto looks on, creating a poetic contrast between heroic strength and marital affection. Each lithograph is matted and set within a finely mottled patinated Wood frame, and showcasing the title of each at the bottom.
