About the Item

Set of Three Dutch Naval Portraits – Van der Hulst, Kallenberg, and Sweers, c.1700s A finely engraved set of three 18th-century portrait prints depicting notable Dutch naval commanders of the 17th century, each framed within an oval border and with descriptive captions. From left to right: 1. Abraham van der Hulst – Vice-Admiral of Holland and West Friesland. Van der Hulst (1619–1666) served with distinction in the Dutch fleet during the Anglo-Dutch Wars, noted for his bravery and tactical skill. He died from wounds sustained at the Four Days’ Battle in 1666. 2. Gerard Kallenberg – Lieutenant-Admiral of Holland and West Friesland. Kallenberg was a senior flag officer in the Dutch navy, holding one of the highest ranks in the Admiralty and overseeing significant naval operations during his career. 3. Isaak Sweers – Vice-Admiral of Holland and West Friesland. Sweers (1622–1673) fought in major naval engagements of the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch Wars, earning a reputation as a courageous and skilled commander before being killed in action at the Battle of Texel. These portraits were likely engraved for an illustrated naval history or biographical series on the great admirals of the Dutch Republic. Each is rendered with careful attention to facial detail, costume, and military regalia, including armour, sashes, and lace collars typical of the period. The engravings bear the names of draughtsmen and engravers, attesting to their production quality. Condition report: Very good condition with strong impressions and clean detail. Light toning to paper and minor handling marks consistent with age. Framing tips: This horizontal arrangement is ideal for display in a single panoramic frame with a neutral mat. A black, gilt, or dark wood moulding will complement the historical style of the prints. Technique: Copperplate engraving on laid paper Maker: Various Dutch engravers, c.1700s
