About the Item
Title: Set of Three Vanity Fair Portraits – Judges, Sovereign and Man of the Day, 1870
Description:
This striking set of three original Vanity Fair chromolithographs dates from late 1869 and early 1870 and forms a visually powerful and well-balanced horizontal trio. All three portraits are drawn by Carlo Pellegrini, signed “Ape,” whose work defines the iconic visual language of Vanity Fair’s golden period.
The left portrait (January 8, 1870, Judges No. 3) depicts a senior judicial figure in traditional robes, captioned “The majesty of the law.” The restrained posture, muted tones, and elongated silhouette give this print a calm, authoritative presence, ideal as a visual anchor within the set.
The central portrait (January 1, 1870, Sovereigns No. 6) presents a seated religious ruler in full ceremonial dress, captioned “The Infallible.” Richly colored vestments in gold, red, and white create a strong focal point and introduce warmth and visual drama to the composition. This is the most decorative and immediately eye-catching print of the trio.
The right portrait (December 17, 1869, Men of the Day No. 17) shows a standing gentleman in a dark suit, captioned “There is no man of greater integrity in his profession.” The understated elegance and neutral palette provide balance to the central image and complete the trio with dignity and restraint.
Together, the three works form a cohesive interior grouping, combining legal authority, spiritual symbolism, and civic virtue. The harmonious palette of greys, browns, creams, and rich accent colors makes this set especially suitable for a study, library, office, or refined living space. Displayed side by side, they create an immediate, ready-made wall installation with historical depth and timeless decorative appeal.
Printed in London in 1869–1870, these chromolithographs offer both authenticity and strong visual impact. Offered as a matched set, ideal for collectors, interior designers, and those seeking character-rich wall art.
Condition report:
Overall very good condition. Light age-related toning and minor surface marks consistent with late 19th-century chromolithographs. Clean impressions with good margins.
Framing tips:
Present as a horizontal trio in matching frames. Soft ivory or warm grey mats with simple black, dark brown, or antique gilt frames will enhance the figures while maintaining a refined, architectural look.
