About the Item

Set of Three Vanity Fair Statesmen Portraits – Victorian London, 1870 Description: This refined set of three original Vanity Fair chromolithographs dates from February 1870 and forms a visually balanced and highly decorative horizontal trio. Drawn by Carlo Pellegrini, signed “Ape,” these portraits belong to the celebrated “Statesmen” series that made Vanity Fair the defining visual chronicle of Victorian political life. The left portrait (February 19, 1870, Statesmen No. 41) depicts a senior legal and parliamentary figure, shown standing with cape and judicial attire. The original caption beneath the image reads: “Sir John Coleridge serves under him.” The strong vertical stance, flowing robe, and restrained palette give this print a dignified, architectural presence. The central portrait (February 26, 1870, Statesmen No. 42) shows a bearded gentleman wearing a top hat and holding a cane, captioned “The Beggar’s Friend.” The slightly forward stance and warm coloring make this the visual focal point of the group, adding character and narrative interest without overwhelming the composition. The right portrait (February 5, 1870, Statesmen No. 39) presents a standing statesman holding his hat, dressed in a long coat, with the caption beginning: “It is hardly to be believed that two political leaders should fall out only because their…” (as printed). The calm posture and neutral tones balance the set and complete the trio with a sense of authority and composure. Together, the three works share a harmonious palette of soft creams, greys, browns, and muted accents, making them exceptionally suitable for modern interiors. Displayed as a set, they create an immediate wall solution ideal for a study, library, hallway, or above a console or sofa. The imagery conveys history, intellect, and character while remaining visually calm and elegant. Printed in London in 1870, these works combine historical authenticity with timeless decorative appeal. Offered as a matched set, ready to hang as a unified installation. Condition report: Overall very good condition. Light age-related toning and minor surface marks consistent with late 19th-century chromolithographs. Clean impressions with good margins. Framing tips: Display as a horizontal trio in matching frames. Use soft ivory or warm grey mats with simple black, dark brown, or antique gilt frames for a refined, interior-friendly presentation.
