About the Item
Early 19th Century Anatomical Engravings of Human Skulls – Comparative Craniology (Set of 2)
A rare pair of early 19th-century anatomical engravings documenting comparative craniology based on skull specimens from different world populations. These finely detailed plates show both superior (top) and lateral (side) views of the skull, with careful mapping of sutures, proportions, and bone structure. Each figure is individually labeled according to the scientific classification systems used in the period.
Translations of figure labels:
Plate I (38 x 20 cm) – Top Views:
1 — From a European
2 — From a Georgian
3 — From an Ethiopian
Plate II (50 x 20 cm) – Side Views:
1 — From a European (The Caucasian extreme)
2 — From a Carib / Indigenous Caribbean (The American intermediate type)
3 — From a Georgian (The Georgian middle type)
4 — From a Tahitian (The Malay intermediate type)
5 — From an Ethiopian (The Ethiopian extreme)
These terms and typologies reflect the early development of anthropological science and the now-discredited 18th–19th century racial classification theories. Today, these engravings are valued as historical documents of the evolution of medical knowledge, anthropology, and scientific illustration.
Large-format fold-out plates such as these were intended for academic reference and are rarely found intact. Highly decorative as a framed pair and especially well-suited for collections relating to the history of medicine, anatomy, phrenology, exploration, or museum studies.
Condition:
Good condition consistent with age. Original fold lines as issued. Light paper toning, a few small scattered spots in margins, and minor handling signs. Printed images remain exceptionally clear with strong, precise engraving detail.
Framing Tips:
Frame side-by-side for maximum educational and visual effect. A neutral or bone-colored mat and a black or dark wood frame will enhance the scientific style. UV-protective glazing recommended to preserve paper tone.

Skulls - The Physiognomy - Etching by Thomas Holloway - 1810
By Thomas Holloway
Located in Roma, IT
Skulls is an etching realized by Thomas Holloway for Johann Caspar Lavater's "Essays on Physiognomy, Designed to Promote the Knowledge and the Love of Mankind", London, Bensley, 1810.
Good conditions.
Johann Caspar Lavater was a swiss theologian and philosopher known throughout Europe for his studies on physiognomy. Following the physiognomy tradition of Della Porta and of many Renaissance and Baroque philosophers, he believed that the character of a person could be elucidated through examining their “lines of countenance" i.e. tracing a profile outline portrait. Being able to "read outside" was the key to "know the inside". Lavater's thought largely influenced Art in the late 18th and early 19th century, as in the case of Johann Fuseli and William Blake (who realized two etchings for Lavater's English edition of his Essay).
Lavater was convinced that he could show his theories by analyzing the portraits of some of the main historical figures of the past, in some cases taken from paintings or (mainly for antiquity...
