About the Item
Set of Two Antique Ornithological Prints of Argus Pheasant — D’Orbigny, Paris, 1849
A magnificent pair of original 19th-century hand-colored engravings depicting the Argus pheasant (Argusianus argus), famed for its extravagant plumage and dramatic mating display. These stunning plates are from the Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle, published in Paris in 1849 under the editorship of Charles Dessalines d’Orbigny, with illustrations by Prêtre and engraving by Vernal / Duménil.
The Argus pheasant, native to Southeast Asia, is celebrated for its extraordinary feathers covered in eye-like patterns, referenced in classical mythology by the hundred-eyed giant “Argus.” Each plate shows the male bird with wings fully extended and tail plumes raised in courtship — a spectacular visual rendered with remarkable precision and delicate coloration.
These engravings feature:
• Fine hand-colored details over stippled and line-engraved backgrounds
• Published by Pierre, Paris
• Titled “L’Argus” below the image in classical serif typography
