About the Item

Title: Sex Appeal – Humorous Hand-Colored Etching by Boris O’Klein, Dirty Dogs of Paris Series This humorous hand-colored etching and aquatint titled “Sex Appeal” is by Boris O’Klein, part of his famous Dirty Dogs of Paris series. Measuring approximately 16 x 43.5 cm (image 13 x 43 cm), the work is signed and titled in pencil by the artist. The composition features a lively parade of dogs, humorously humanized and full of expression. A row of male dogs, including a dachshund, terrier, and bulldog, eagerly follows a flirtatious female dog wearing a red bow who looks back coyly. The scene is a playful reflection of human behavior, humorously exploring the theme of attraction and desire through canine characters. The selective use of color, with bright red collars and the bow, adds focus and charm, while the aquatint technique provides a soft tonal range that enhances the sense of motion and personality. Boris O’Klein (1893–1985) was born in Moscow and raised in France, where he became well known for his series Les Chiens de Paris, or Dirty Dogs of Paris. His works from the 1930s to 1950s often depict mischievous and anthropomorphic dogs in comic or slightly risqué situations. With his sharp eye for humor and his mastery of etching and aquatint, O’Klein became a favorite among collectors and visitors to Paris, his art capturing both the elegance and cheekiness of the era. Condition: Slight overall yellowing consistent with age, margins clean, impression strong and well preserved. Framing tips: A simple black or walnut frame with a wide cream or off-white mat enhances the warm tones and highlights the humor of the piece. A subtle inner line in red or burgundy can draw attention to the dog collars and bow for added visual harmony. Technique: Hand-colored etching and aquatint Maker: Boris O’Klein, Paris, circa 1930s
