About the Item

Elegant 1769 Elephant Anatomy Suite – Buffon Scientific Engravings Set of Six Description: This remarkable suite of six original 18th-century elephant anatomy engravings comes from the rare Dutch edition of Buffon’s monumental natural history, published in Amsterdam by J.H. Schneider in 1769. These plates form part of the highly sought-after anatomical section accompanying the chapters on the elephant in Tome XI, where Buffon and Daubenton set out to illustrate the animal with scientific accuracy unprecedented for the period. The engravings were executed under the direction of Jacques de Sève, Buffon’s principal artist, whose clarity of line and refined draughtsmanship shaped the visual identity of the entire Histoire Naturelle. This set provides a complete visual study of the elephant’s external and internal structure. One plate shows the trunk, tusk root, and tail in impressive detail, revealing the complex textures and musculature. Another focuses on the foot and the remarkable arrangement of its bones, cartilage, and pads. A third plate depicts the elephant’s hide under magnification, with circular diagrams illustrating the grain and texture of the skin’s surface. The skeletal plate, one of the most iconic in the series, presents a full elephant skeleton set on a plinth, accompanied by a subtle landscape in the background—a combination of scientific observation and Enlightenment-era romanticism. The final two plates examine the massive skull, jaw, teeth, and tusk core, offering a rare and precise look at one of the most distinctive anatomical structures in the animal kingdom. The engravings exhibit the fine cross-hatching and crisp linework typical of copperplate engraving at its height. The paper retains the characteristic soft tone and wide margins of Dutch 18th-century printing. Together, these plates create a visually cohesive and exceptionally decorative set, appealing both as scientific illustrations and as elegant wall art. Such complete and matching anatomical suites are far less common on the market than the standard Buffon animal plates, making this a particularly desirable group for collectors of natural history or for interior designers seeking authentic Enlightenment-period decorative prints. Condition report: Very good for age. Light toning and scattered minor foxing in margins; occasional small handling marks consistent with 18th-century sheets. Strong impressions throughout. Wide margins with visible plate marks. No tears or repairs observed. Framing tips: These six plates display beautifully as a coordinated grid of two rows of three, using matching ivory or soft cream mats with thin black or sepia ink lines. A simple black, walnut, or dark oak frame gives a refined museum-style presentation. For a more contemporary look, use floating mounts in natural oak or matte black. Ensure all six are framed identically for the strongest visual effect.
