About the Item
Spanish Diligence Passing the Balaguer Pass – Hand-Colored Engraving by Rouargue Frères, c.1845
Description:
A fine 19th-century hand-colored engraving titled Diligence Espagnole – Passage du Col de Balaguer, drawn and engraved by Rouargue Frères and printed by F. Chardon aîné in Paris. This dynamic travel scene vividly depicts a Spanish stagecoach (diligence) pulled by a team of galloping mules navigating the treacherous mountain road of the Balaguer Pass, situated along the Mediterranean coast between Tarragona and Valencia.
The composition captures the drama of early overland travel in Spain — a stagecoach laden with passengers and luggage races down a rocky slope toward the sea, accompanied by multiple riders urging the animals forward. The background shows rugged coastal cliffs and the ruins of ancient stone structures, while the foreground is filled with lush vegetation including agave and prickly pear. The delicate hand-coloring enhances the sense of movement and light, giving texture to the landscape and vitality to the figures and animals.
The Rouargue brothers, Émile and Adolphe, were renowned French engravers and illustrators celebrated for their detailed travel and architectural prints during the mid-19th century. Their works often appeared in illustrated atlases and travel publications, offering European audiences picturesque views of foreign landscapes and local customs. This particular scene combines both topographical realism and romantic drama, embodying the fascination of the period with exploration and the dangers of travel.
Printed in Paris by F. Chardon aîné, known for high-quality art and scientific engravings, this piece is an excellent example of French craftsmanship during the height of 19th-century lithographic artistry. The print demonstrates superb engraving detail, crisp linework, and soft, transparent hand-coloring.
A striking and decorative piece for collectors of historical travel art, Spanish prints, or 19th-century engravings.
Condition report:
Very good condition. Slight age toning and faint handling marks in the margins, not affecting the image. Strong impression with clean, detailed coloring and full wide margins.
Framing tips:
Ideal with a soft beige or ivory mat and a dark wood or bronze-toned frame to emphasize the earthy colors of the Spanish landscape. A double mat with a red or terracotta inner line can highlight the coach’s detailing and bring warmth to the presentation.
