Si tratta della tavola n. XI della pubblicazione inerente le architetture navali del 1 luglio 1816,
raffigurante il prospetto del fianco e altri dettagli di una Fregata con 38 cannoni. La stampa reca la firma dell’incisore Milan sculp. Buono stato. Misure cm 73,7x29,3 – inches 29x11.5.
Originariamente il termine fregata era riferito ad una barca di piccolo pescaggio con uno o due alberi a vela e a remi. Durante il cinquecento e maggiormente nel seicento la tipologia cambiò notevolmente. Venivano chiamate fregate tutte le navi sia da guerra che mercantili che corsare con 3 alberi con vele latine sull’albero di mezzana, e dotate di circa 40 cannoni.
In seguito alle numerose modifiche che hanno interessato tutte le principali marinerie veliche dell’epoca, dalla metà del seicento in avanti venne chiamata fregate la nave da guerra a tre alberi, dotata di un solo ponte di batteria coperto.
Utilizzata con compiti di pattugliamento, esplorazione, guerra sottocosta e scorta.
